Zigzag band tattoo on a forearm with a sleeping dog
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black French bulldog sleeps with its head resting on a person's forearm, which is wrapped in a bold tattoo of solid black bands filled with zigzag and chevron patterns. The tattoo is rendered in heavy black ink with clean edges, and the grey sweater sleeve and dark background keep the focus on the arm and dog. The composition is close and cropped, with the person's face not shown.

Dear Tom,

The dog has taken to sleeping on Mam's kitchen chair now that you're gone, and I have given up shooing him off it. Pilot, we still call him, though he's no more a pilot than the cat is. He came off the Mevagissey boat last spring with a bad leg and a worse temper, and he has decided the Hendry house is his. He snores like the winch on the Morwenna.
Mr Pascoe came round on Tuesday asking after the hull you were meant to fix before the slip. I told him you'd be back when the weather let you, and he looked at me the way he looks at a bad catch. He's not wrong, mind. The net shed roof is leaking over the good twine, and I've put two buckets under it that Mam says are for rainwater, not for pride.
Something else. I finally went through the box under the stairs, the one with Dad's chart pencils. Under the old tide tables there was a folded sheet with the band pattern he used to chalk along the gunwale, zigzags stacked one above another like the wake of a boat turning too sharp. He never said what it meant. I've copied it in the margin of this page. Thought you'd want it, since you always said the old boats had better marks than the new ones.
Come home when the Morwenna's in. The dog waits by the door at four, and I'm not sure which of us he's expecting more.
Nell
