Man hugging a large dog, black and grey arm tattoo

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A shirtless man with short dark hair sits on a white chair, wrapping his tattooed arm around a large dark grey dog whose head rests against his shoulder. The arm carries a densely shaded black and grey sleeve of swirling ornamental linework, and a partial word is visible in small lettering on his thigh. The plain white wall, grey table and glass coffee carafe make up a minimal, softly lit background.

The lift in Carrow House had been broken since Tuesday, so Ruben took the stairs with Hector, which meant forty minutes of negotiation on every half-landing. The mastiff sat down on each one and considered the concrete as if it had personally offended him. Ruben talked him up with dog biscuits and the flat, patient voice he used on the council.

The stairwell walls had been cream once and were now a map of everyone who had ever been bored in them. The only clean thing was the iron railing, painted black so many times that its scrolls of leaf and wave had gone soft at the edges. Hector liked to lean his whole weight against it, and Ruben had stopped minding. Mr Lusk, who had lived on nine and left Hector to him in March, used to say the dog trusted anything with a curl in it.

They reached nineteen out of breath, and the door to the roof was propped open with a brick. Wind came in smelling of rain and diesel. Hector stepped out onto the gravel, looked at the cranes swinging over the river and the grey smoke of the old works leaning east, and then came back to lean on Ruben instead.

Ruben let him. The dog's head settled heavily on his shoulder, the way Mr Lusk's always had when he wanted to be carried the last few steps. Below them the city went on being loud and lit. Ruben decided the stairs had been the right way after all.
