Zip opening skin to red muscle on shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A photograph of a realistic tattoo on a shoulder and upper arm, showing a metal zipper pulled open across the skin to reveal dense red muscle fibres underneath. The zipper teeth and pull are shaded in grey and silver with fine detail, while the muscle has soft red and dark shading that gives it depth. The tattoo fills most of the frame against plain skin, with a dark blurred background.

The oilskin came in on a wet Tuesday with its zip jammed a hand's width above the hem, and Ada Pengelly carried it through to the back room of the boarding house, where the gas ring hissed and the sea rattled the sash. The lodger who brought it, a quiet man called Mr Tremayne who had paid by the week since Easter, said only that the zip had caught on a ferry rail and would neither rise nor fall.

She eased the slider loose with a bodkin, working the teeth one at a time the way her mother had taught her to lift a dropped stitch. Under the flap the lining showed, not the grey flannel she expected but a deep red wool, rubbed thin in long grooves, the colour of the inside of a cut plum. She ran her thumb along it and thought of the boats coming in at dusk, every one lit, and the women on the quay counting them twice.
The top tooth had sheared clean away, so the zip could not simply be replaced. She unpicked the bottom eight inches, seated a new brass slider on the old tape, and sewed the seam with red thread because it was the only spool in the house that matched. When Mr Tremayne came down for his tea he found the coat on the scullery door, the new stitching bright along the shoulder like a fresh line drawn with a pencil.
'You've used red,' he said. 'It's the only thread I had,' said Ada, though it was not quite true. He turned the seam under the light for a long while. Then, for the first time since Easter, he took the coat down from the hook and put his arms through it.
