Abstract blue and pink flower on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A stylised flower with a fan-shaped blue head, pink radiating streaks and a green centre, set on a long stem with a green leaf. Bold black outlines sit over soft, painterly shading in blue, pink and green. The design fills the frame, centred on the thigh with the stem running down towards the knee.

Mind the nets, they bite, and sit where Dolly Pascoe sat before the rain took her chair. Right, you want the Mary Jane, the boat with the flower on her bow. Everyone in Porthlenna knows her, though not many will say why. She came in off the grey water the spring of the bad gales, her hull scraped to bare wood and her skipper gone silent, and across her bow was a flower that nobody remembered painting.

The paint was blue as a kingfisher's back, a fan of petals lifting like a gull's wings, with pink rays shooting out from the heart and a green centre bright as new bracken. Down the stem ran a single leaf, pointed like a fish-hook. Tamsin Rowe, who mended sails for her father, swore she had only been mixing blue for the cabin door. She said the brush moved on its own, and the lines came out black and sure, like someone drawing a map they had already walked.
Three weeks later the fleet went out past the Mouth and the sky turned the colour of slate. Eleven boats, forty men, and the fog came down so thick you couldn't see your own oars. Then the Mary Jane's bow began to glow, faint pink and blue, and Dolly's grandson swore he saw the petals open in the murk. They rowed for that light the best part of a night, and every boat came home.
So each spring we give her a fresh coat of blue, and each spring Tamsin paints the same flower, though the leaf gets a little longer every year. Go on, put your hand flat on the rail there. Feel how the wood is warm where the petals are. That's the paint remembering the sun. Now fetch me my pipe, and mind the nets on your way back.
