Dragonfly flower and ladybird on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A bold tattoo of a flower with teal, blue-green wings and a pink centre, drawn with a thick black swirling stem that runs down the arm. Pink and teal four-point sparkles sit beside the flower, and a small red ladybird with black spots is at the lower end. Heavy black outlines frame saturated colour with soft yellow shading around the flower.

Mind the wasps on that windfall, they've been at the Discovery since breakfast. Sit yourself on the wall, the grass is wet from the sprinkler. Now. You'll have heard about the summer the greenfly came up out of the ground like a bad debt, every shoot on the old Bramleys gone grey with them?

Nell Pellow was eleven and nobody had asked her opinion. She went down to the ditch with a jam jar and came back with a dragonfly, blue-green as a bottle, that had mistaken our orchard for the mere. She let it go on the rose by the gate. It didn't fly off. It sat there with its wings out flat like a pair of spoons, and the rose, being a sensible rose, dropped its petals one by one until only a single pink bloom was left, and by evening the bloom had wings and the wings had a flower in the middle of them, and nobody could tell you which had come first.
The stars were sparks off the bonfire the night the hops came in, and the stem was the bramble that ran along the ditch, which Nell followed all the way to the bottom of the orchard. There, on the last young tree, a ladybird was working through the greenfly one leaf at a time. Nell asked it, very politely, if it would help. It did. Three days of red going up and down those branches, and the Bramleys came back green and clean.
If you walk down there tonight you'll still find the stem running from the gate to the ditch, and the ladybird at the end of it, red as a pillar box, minding its own business. Go on, the wasps have had their fill of that windfall. Give me your hand and I'll walk you to the gate.
