At Coldharbour Halt the trains stopped only when someone lit the lamp, and for forty years that lamp was lit by Ida Morrow, who kept a tin bath of pond water beside the coal stage. In the bath grew a single lotus she had raised from seed sent by a sailor brother, and nobody in the village believed it would flower in a Yorkshire winter. It flowered anyway, pale pink at the rim and deep rose at the heart, and it opened each morning before the first milk train.

The railway men said the flower was bad luck for the signals and wanted it moved to the allotments. Ida said the line had been laid in a curl around the old mill pond, so the track bent round and round before it crossed the moor, and anything that followed the bend of the land had a right to stay. She pointed at the rails swinging away into the fog, and the men went quiet.

When the company closed the halt in the spring, a gang came to lift the points. They found the bath empty except for a black root wound tight as a watch spring, and a thin trail of cinder that ran from the bath, round the coal stage, and out along the sleepers in one long coil. Ida had walked it every evening of her last year, lamp in hand, tracing the curl back to where the water had been.

Nobody could say whether the lotus had grown from the line or the line from the lotus. The lamp still hangs unlit on the post at Coldharbour, and on still mornings the rails shine in a spiral that the frost never settles on.
