Abstract elephant head on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of an elephant head sits on the forearm, drawn with loose grey sketch lines and shading. A compass rose, fine radiating lines and a column of dots run down the design, with red and teal strokes cutting across the head and trunk. The black and grey linework is combined with colour washes, and the composition fills the forearm from the wrist to just below the elbow.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer and mind the fire, it has a temper like Dunstan's goat. Has any of you walked the path past Hollin Stile, where the forest thins and the beech trees lean together like gossips? Nobody goes that way after dark. That is how it began, with a surveyor named Ambrose Pell who did not believe in dark.

Pell came up from the valley in the wet spring of the great flood, carrying a brass compass his mother had given him and a ledger to draw every field the king had not yet counted. He drew the hedges straight. He drew the river where the river was not. And on the third night, when the rain had stopped and the frogs were loud, he heard something breathing among the beeches, long and slow, like a bellows in a forge.

He went towards it with his lantern held high. What stood between the trunks was an elephant, grey as ash, far too big for any English wood, its trunk folded over its tusks like a man in prayer. Where its eyes should have been there were two rings of fine lines, the way a compass rose spins out from its centre. Across its brow ran a red stroke, bright as a fresh cut, and a teal stripe ran down its flank like a river on a map. Pell opened his ledger. The elephant looked at the blank page, then at him, and lowered its head.

Pell never drew another hedge. He walked the forest with the beast for a season, and every drop of rain it shook from its ears he marked as a star, and every path it chose became a road. When he came back to the valley he was grey himself and would not say where true north was. Only, if you go to Hollin Stile at dusk and stand very still, you will hear something breathing, and the beeches will lean the way it is pointing. Mind your step on the way home.
