White wolf with red sun marking on forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A white wolf walks forward across the forearm, with its head turned toward the viewer and its mouth slightly open. A bold red sun-like symbol sits on its forehead, and red outlines frame its dark eyes. Soft blue and purple shading and dark background tones give the wolf depth and a glowing, smoky backdrop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The van's heater had given up somewhere past the ring road, so I had my hands jammed in my armpits when the wolf stepped out from under the railway arch on Canal Street and onto the wet pavement in front of the bread van. It was white as a sheet on a washing line, and the mist off the canal curled around its legs as if it had climbed up out of the water. A red sun with a broken rim sat on its brow, and it studied my windscreen the way the night foreman studies a loaf he suspects of being stale.

I should have driven on. Instead I left the hazards blinking and followed it along the towpath while the city slept behind its metal shutters. It did not hurry. Every few yards it glanced back, mouth a little open, as though it had something to say and was waiting for me to catch up. We passed the chip shop with its grille down, the empty bus shelter someone had painted with a crescent moon, and the lock keeper's cottage with one lamp still burning.

At the old mill bridge it stopped. The water below had gone the colour of a bruise, blue into violet, and the wolf's reflection stood in it even after the real animal lowered itself onto the cobbles. I asked it, out loud, what it wanted, and felt foolish saying it to an animal. It only blinked, slowly, the way a lighthouse lamp turns.

Then the sky above the mill chimney began to pale at its edges, and the red sun on the wolf's brow flared until the whole towpath glowed with it. The wolf shook itself like a dog out of the canal and trotted back under the arch. I drove the bread to the depot with my fingers still numb, and when the foreman asked why I was late, I told him I had been walking with something that knew the way home before the rest of us did.
