Jellyfish tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A jellyfish is tattooed along the outer forearm, with its bell in soft orange, yellow, red and blue washes near the elbow. Fine black outlines form the long, wavy tentacles, which trail down towards the wrist and fade into the bare skin. The photo is taken indoors against a checked floor, with the hand relaxed and the tattoo as the main focus.

Dear Nell, the glass you sent came through the post wrapped in a sheet of the Gazette, and the lighthouse cat has been sitting on the parcel ever since as if it were a hen on eggs. Inside was the jellyfish you found on the shingle at Porth Dinas, the one you wrote about, the one with the bell like a lantern somebody had left out in the rain. You were right that it doesn't look dead. It looks like it is deciding something.

Father says the lion's mane out past the Bitter Rocks came in thick this week, and the boats had to lift their nets in the dark because the trailing tentacles wrap round a man's wrists before he knows it. He cut one free from Tom Pascoe's gansey with his knife and said the thing was fine and clean and quite beautiful, which for him is a speech. I thought of you then, of how you once tried to draw them in the margins of your arithmetic book and gave up because the lines kept wanting to go somewhere of their own.

I've put your jar on the sill above the sink where the morning light comes through the salt on the window. When the tide turns the water inside it still shivers a little, the way the sea does when the wind drops. I'll write again when the herring are in. Mind you wear the gloves I sent, and don't you dare go picking up anything else off the beach.

Your sister, Ivy
