A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The brass-maker's daughter had been told she could not carry the big bowl down to the river, so she carried it anyway, balanced on one hip with a cloth folded beneath it. Her uncle said the water in the lower pools was thick with silt after the rains and that the bowl would sink. She went anyway, because the bowl had been her grandmother's and nobody had used it in a long while.

At the bend where the reeds leaned over, a heron stood on one leg and watched her come. It did not move when she knelt. The bowl was black inside from years of smoke, and when she dipped it the water came up pale and striped, like the grain of a split plank. She saw that the ripples on the surface had lines running through them, fine and close, as if someone had combed the river with a comb of hair. Behind her a sheet of coloured light lay across the stones, red and green and a blue like a jay's wing, and it moved when she moved, though no sun was out to make it.

She filled the bowl to its lip and turned to go, and the heron lifted and went up in a slow spiral, past a pale disc of moon that had not been there a moment before. She carried the water home without spilling a drop, which surprised her uncle more than anything. He tipped it into the forge trough and the whole surface lit up with circles, one black, one pink, one blue, overlapping like coins thrown on a table. He said nothing for a long time. Then he took down the old tongs and handed them to her.
