Colourful geometric abstract on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large abstract design of overlapping triangles, circles, arcs and vertical lines covers the outer thigh. The shapes are filled with bright pink, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, with soft wash-like edges, and black linework and dots add contrast. The design spreads from the upper hip down the thigh against a dark background, and the wearer's blue lace underwear is visible at the top.

Old Matthias ground lenses in a hut above the Stellerpass, where the road bends so sharply that carters swore the mountain was walking. Nobody bought his glass. He traded it for salt and bread, and what he wanted most was one clear pane that did not colour the light.

His daughter Ilse, nine years old, swept the grinding dust into jars. One March a rockfall took the top off the pass and a surveyor's cart went over the edge with its crates. Three days later a boy from the village carried up a sack of prism shards he had picked from the scree, each one cut to an edge no man had polished. Ilse sorted them on the hearthstone: a red the size of a thumb, a green like river ice, a yellow sliver with a black vein running through it.
Matthias said the shards were worthless until they were in the right order. So each morning she laid them out on the snow and moved them with a stick, while the sun came through the gap in the peaks and threw colour across the far wall. The carters stopped to watch. A woman in a grey coat, come up from the lowlands to find her husband's survey party, stood with her hands in her sleeves until the light slid off the rock.
On the last day of the thaw Ilse set the final piece, a blue triangle, and the whole arrangement blazed across the woman's face. "That's the road," the girl said, pointing at the dark lines between the circles, where the stones had been set to mark the turns. The woman pressed the blue piece into her palm, thanked them both, and walked down the mountain without looking back, carrying the only map of the pass that anyone had ever made out of light.
