Geometric figure with faceted tail on forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a stylised figure with a checkered red and orange upper body, leaning over a large stippled dotwork sphere. Its lower half tapers into a faceted teal and green tail that curls around the lower forearm. Solid fills, sharp facets and fine dot shading give it a bold, graphic look against a brick wall background.

Mind the gate, it sticks in wet weather, same as your grandad did. Sit down, pet, and let me tell you about the mermaid who lived in the rain butt under the rhubarb. She was no beauty. She wore her coat in squares, red and orange like a fire somebody had raked over, and her tail was the green of bottle glass, cut into facets so the light came off it in pieces.

All summer she rolled a speckled ball along the rim of that barrel, dark and pitted like a starling's egg. The gardeners said it was a cannonball from the old wall. Your great-great-grandmother swore it was the moon, come down to rest, and she swept up the flakes of it every morning so the cats wouldn't eat them.
One October the frost came early and the ball split clean along its dots. The mermaid sat with her chin on her fist, the way you do when a thing you love has gone, and she wept into the water until the butt ran over onto the path. Nobody saw her leave. But the rhubarb came up the next spring redder than anyone had ever seen it.
So if you look in that barrel tomorrow, Tom, you'll find a little stone with a dark star in its middle. Put it in your pocket and don't tell your mam. She'll know anyway.
