Abstract organic tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo covers the outer arm with a tangled, branching design that reads as roots, veins or sinewy growth. Fine grey linework and soft, sketchy shading give the forms a loose, hand-drawn feel. Reds, oranges, pinks and green accents dominate on pale skin, with a black sleeve and a kitchen background framing the arm.

The river under Harrowgate had been choked with roots since the bridge fell, and Maud Teasdale was the only one who would go down into the culvert to cut them. She went with a bread knife and a lamp hung from her belt, because the council would not pay for proper tools and her father had never owned any. The roots were red-brown where the lamp touched them and they moved, very slightly, the way a sleeper's fingers move.

She found the heart of it near the old sluice gate, where the tangle thickened into a knot as big as a pram. Something threaded through it caught the light: a copper ring, a child's shoe, the bell from a tram that had stopped running before she was born. The roots had wound around all of it patiently, the way a mother binds a splinter. Maud cut one strand and it bled a thin green sap onto her wrist.
She stood there a long while with the knife in her hand. Then she sawed through the next root, and the next, but she left the shoe where it sat, and when she climbed out at dawn the river ran clear beneath the broken bridge for the first time in years. By noon the roots had grown back across the stones, pale at the tips, reaching for the water as if they had only been waiting for someone to ask them to stop.
