Red phoenix and cherry blossom on a torso

Japanese · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A large red phoenix rises up the body, with bare branches and blossom sprays curving above it and red petals falling below. The linework is bold and the shading is soft, with red fills and grey wash swirls that create movement behind the bird. The design wraps around the side of the torso and fills most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had not yet left the pass when Tomasz Lind came up the switchbacks with a mule that refused every third step. He had been paid to deliver salt to the monastery at the top, and the monks had written in their letter that the road was clear. It was not clear. Wind pushed the loose snow into long grey ribbons across the stones, and a little below the last shrine, where the rock bent like an elbow, he found a girl sitting on her pack with her hands in her sleeves and a single red petal caught in her hair.

She said her name was Hana and that her brother had gone ahead with the sheep. She said it as if she expected him to argue. Tomasz had no time for arguing. He cut a strip from his own blanket, bound her boots, and walked beside her, leading the mule with one hand and steadying her with the other. Along the path, where the old cherry trees grew stunted from the cold, branches had come down in the storm, and their blossom lay scattered across the snow like spilt wine. Hana stopped at each one and picked up a petal, pressing it flat between two fingers.

Near the top the wind dropped all at once, and the cloud tore open. Above them a bird stood on the ridge, its wings half raised, feathers the colour of coals in a draught. It did not call. It watched them the way a mother watches a child cross a stream, then lifted and went down into the valley in a long low arc, trailing red over the grey. Hana laughed for the first time that day. She opened her palm and the petal she had been carrying had turned the same colour as the bird's tail. Tomasz told her it was only the light. She let him believe it, and they went on up towards the lamps of the monastery together.
