Acorns and oak leaves on a limb
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows three acorns with orange-speckled caps and pale tan nuts, set among green oak leaves with dark outlines. Solid fills and bold black outlines give it a traditional look, with smooth shading on the acorns. Colour ink dominates against the pale skin, and the plastic-wrapped background suggests a studio setting.

The acorns came ashore in a fish box, wedged between a broken oar and a bottle with no label, and I was the only one on Scarrow Holm who thought them worth the wet fingers it took to pick them out. Dad said nothing grew on the rock but lichen and spite. He said it again when I pressed nine nuts into the crumbling soil at the foot of the lamp-house wall, where the spray could reach them but the north wind could not.

Most of them rotted. Two sprouted in the first spring, pale and absurd, and I fed them rainwater carried up from the cistern in a tin bucket every dawn before I cleaned the lens. The gulls took the leaves for a while, then left them alone. By the third summer one stem had thickened enough to lean against the wall, and its leaves had cut the bright edges that Dad said belonged to some other, kinder country.
The winter the cable snapped and the mainland went dark for a fortnight, we kept the light by hand, Dad on the first watch and me on the second, turning the paraffin wicks with cold fingers. Somewhere past three in the morning a boat called out on the radio, lost, asking for any light at all. I climbed onto the gallery to check the beam and saw, below me, the oak black against the foam, its crown the only thing on the rock taller than a man.
The crab boat from Skerrow came in on the beam before dawn, two brothers aboard who swore they had steered by the lamp. I did not tell them about the tree. In the morning I gathered the acorns the gale had knocked loose, their caps freckled like the ones in the box, and packed them back into the fish box for the next person who needed a reason to plant something here.
