Now then, sit yourselves down by the stove, because the fog's come in off the bar and it'll be an hour before the boats make harbour. You'll want to hear about the autumn the scarecrow walked down from the top field.

Nobody in Porthgwidden had seen a scarecrow like him. He was tall as the gatepost and thin as a herring bone, with a stripe down his coat like the marks on a buoy, and a face that was nothing but a skull with two black holes for eyes and a grin cut square across it. Old Tom Pascoe swore he'd stood at the allotment gate all summer and never once blinked. The children carried eleven pumpkins down from the fields in their arms and set them along the harbour wall, and the stranger walked the row lighting each one with a match he never struck.

Then the mist rolled over the breakwater and the pumpkins began to glow, not orange any more but a soft smoky pink, like the inside of a mussel shell. The fishermen rowed out blind that night. Every one of them said the same thing after: they steered by those lanterns on the wall, and the lanterns kept pace with them all the way in.

Come morning, Pascoe's lad found a single pumpkin left on the wall, carved with a crooked smile, and the stranger gone. The boats had come home with every net full. So every October since, somebody in this village sets one candle in one pumpkin on that wall, and nobody asks who lit it. Mind you pass the milk to Ada, she's been waiting this age.
