Traditional flower bouquet held by a hand
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A healed traditional tattoo shows a bouquet of blue, pink, red and yellow flowers with a tulip and daisies, tied with green stems and held by a hand. A yellow scrolled border runs along one edge, and a partly visible ribbon banner and a smaller floral motif sit beside it. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with solid colour fills and simple shading on a light skin tone against a pale background.

Dear Tom,

The tulips came up late this year, all of them at once on the Tuesday after you sailed, as if the garden had been holding its breath. Mrs Ferrier next door says it's because the wind came round to the east, and I have decided to believe her. I cut the best of them along with the daisies and the bit of red valerian by the wall, and I tied them with green twine the way you showed me, stems together, not too tight.
I took them down to the quay this morning meaning to leave them on the bollard by the ice house, but the Margaret Ann was still out past the breakwater, and Ruth Pell's boy was standing there with a bucket of bait. So I gave them to him instead and asked him to pass them to whoever came in first. He said it was a daft thing to do with fish on the boats. I said it was a daft thing to do with the sea, and he laughed, and that was that.
Don't think I'm soft. I know the sea takes what it likes, and I know you'd tell me I'm trying to keep you from flying off somewhere, which I'm not. The boats come home on the tide whatever the weather. So I've put the kettle on the back ring and left the scullery door unlatched, and I'm keeping one daisy back in the jug on the sill for you.
Come in quiet if it's late. You'll know the flowers by the smell of the twine.
Yours, Nell
