Acoustic guitar on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black silhouette of an acoustic guitar, with the neck angled up and the body curving toward the lower left of the arm. The design has smooth outlines and no shading or interior detail, and the ink is a single dark tone. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale arm against a plain light background, with the woman's hair and green dress visible at the edge of the frame.

Sit nearer the oven, the cold gets into the old and the young alike at this hour. Ruth Abney's bakery on Hadley Street was already warm when Tom Pardoe came knocking, his guitar case strapped to his back like a sleeping child, flour on his coat from somebody else's shop.

He had no money, only a sentence he said he'd been working on for three weeks. Ruth told him the sourdough would not wait and the back room was no place for singing, so he sat on an upturned crate among the proving baskets and played anyway, low and careful, so the dough would not hear him over its rising. The lamp caught the curve of the body and the long neck pointing up at the ceiling like a finger asking a question nobody had answered yet.

He tuned the strings with his ear pressed to the wood. When the first loaves went in, the song was finished, and Ruth gave him the heel of the batch wrapped in brown paper and a promise she never meant to hold him to. He did not come back for the guitar. She hung it on the nail above the flour bins, where its shape stayed pale in the dust.

Most mornings now, before the first van pulls up, I hear it faintly through the wall, one low string ringing when the ovens shift. That is the sound I open the shutters to. Mind the step on your way out.
