The rod was cut from a rowan that the storm had thrown onto the shingle at Skerry Vaun, and Ailsa Gunn carried it down to the water every morning before the gulls were awake. She tied the line herself, and every few fathoms she knotted in a small loop of red wool, one for each thing the sea had taken from the island that year. Her brother's boat. A ewe that went over the cliff at Cnoc Dubh. The first tooth of her youngest, which she had buried under the wall and never told anyone about.

The line ran straight out past the kelp to the black rock the islanders called the Gannet's Thumb, because the seabirds sat on it in rows like a hand held up to be counted. Nobody fished near it. Everybody said the mackerel gathered there, and everybody said it in the same flat voice, the one people use for things they would rather not know.

On the forty-first morning of that autumn the rod bent so hard that the rowan creaked. Ailsa leaned back on her heels and felt the weight turn, slow and patient, the way the tide turns. Then she began to reel in, and the wool knots came up one by one through her fingers, each cut loose and drifting away on the swell. She did not hold on to them. When the hook broke the surface it was bare, and the rock behind it was only a rock, wet and ordinary in the first light, with a single gannet standing on it looking bored.
