The fiddle had been left in the boat when the tide came in, and Morag went down to the shingle at dawn to see what the sea had kept. Her uncle's instrument lay face up among the wrack, its belly split but its scroll still whole, curled like a fern that had decided against unfurling. Nobody on Eilean Mòr played anymore. The last player had gone to Glasgow for work and never sent for his things.

She carried it up the path to the cottage and set it on the table beside the bread. Her grandmother watched from the hearth and said nothing, which was how she said most things. Morag ran a thumb along the dark wood and found, under the varnish, a clef cut so shallow she had to tilt the lamp to see it. It wound round the sound hole like a sleeping eel, and its tail flicked out toward the bottom bout as if it wanted to be let loose.

She glued the belly herself that week, binding it with lengths of twine and a patience she did not know she owned. On the seventh night the wind dropped, and she drew the bow across the strings. The note that came out was thin and wrong, then smoothed, then rang out over the water until the gulls lifted off the roof. Her grandmother put down her needles. Across the bay, a light went on in the house that had been dark since the spring.

In the morning there was a parcel on the step, tied with the same grey twine, and inside it a single new string wrapped in oilcloth.
