Ad infinitum script on the side ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the words ad infinitum in flowing cursive script, with the capital A looped and the rest of the phrase written in a continuous line. The linework is dark and fairly even, with no shading or fill, and the ink is black against lightly lit skin. The tattoo sits across the centre of the frame, with a hand gathering red fabric at the top edge and a dim background at the left.

Dear Tom,

The mule train came over Garrow Col yesterday with the salt, and Mr Ansel counted every bag twice, then made the drovers count them again, because he says the ledger has to close or the Company will not pay for the summer. I told him the ledger has never closed in the eleven years I have kept it, and that the mountain does not care whether it closes. He did not laugh. He wrote the figure on the wall beside the door in chalk, and it is still there, a column of numbers that runs on past the edge of the board.

I have started to think the sum is the point. Each man who crosses writes his name in the book and then, beneath it, the year he expects to come back, and most of them put the same year they put the last time. Nobody has ever written a number smaller than the one before. Ad infinitum, Ansel calls it when he is in a mood, tapping the chalk against the frame like a metronome.

Last week a boy from the valley asked me what I would do if the pass ever ran out of people to count. I said I would close the book and come home to you. He said that was not an answer, it was a kind of weather. I have been turning that over since.

Write soon. Tell Mother the cough has gone from the carters. Keep the lamp lit for me on the stair.

Yours, Ida
