Fine line script lettering on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a delicate cursive script tattoo on the inner forearm, with a thin, single-needle style line running under the words. The lettering is set diagonally, rising to the right, with a long tail on the final letters and a small dot placed above the left side. The soft grey background and light fabric at the top edge keep the focus on the thin black ink.

Dear Ada, the frost has taken the last of the bramble at the end of Hobb's Lane, and Mr Corbin says the beeches will come down before Lady Day if the wind keeps on from the west. I went up to the edge of Kettle Wood this morning with the saw on my shoulder, meaning to fell the dead ash that has been leaning over the stile since Mother's time.

There is a hollow in the ash, not a knot but a proper hollow, and in it I found a tin box wrapped in oilcloth. Inside were eleven letters in a hand I did not know, all addressed to someone called Wren, none of them sent. Each one ends the same way, with a long slanted line of words I could not make out in full, something about letting a thing go down the river the way the water takes the leaves. The last one is dated the winter the footbridge washed out.
I sat on the stile a long while reading them. I thought of Father sitting where I sit now, saying the wood keeps what we do not need. So I have left the ash standing and the box where it was, and I put the saw back in the shed. Mrs Pyke at the shop asked if I had got the tree down, and I said no, I had let it be.
I am enclosing a leaf I pressed from the lid of the box, the only thing I took. Come up on Sunday and we will walk to the hollow together. Bring your boots, the path has gone to mud. Your loving brother, Tom.
