Fine line script quote along the back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical line of cursive script in black ink runs down the side of a bare back, following the curve of the ribs. The fine, slightly slanted linework is crisp and evenly weighted, with the letters set closely together in a single line. The image is warm and dimly lit, with the subject's hair falling over the shoulder and no colour in the ink.

You are mending the big top's last tear at midnight, the needle slick with tallow, while the old elephant snores against the guy ropes. The show folded in Preston in October and the bank took the posters, but nobody thought to take the canvas, so you sit on an upturned crate and sew.

Teodor comes across the frost with two mugs of tea and sets one beside you without a word. Eleven seasons he has stood you against the board and thrown his knives around your outline, and in the spring one went wide and opened your cheek to the ear. You have spoken to him since only to count the takings. He is also the one who painted the name over the wagon door in gold leaf, curling every letter the way his mother taught him in Lodz.
"The lion's sold," he says. "Ashdown wants the ring for scrap." You don't look up. You tell him the stitch is holding, and that is as close to yes as you come. He lowers himself onto the step, knees cracking, and says he is sorry about the cheek, and sorry the morning after, and the morning after that, in a way that asks for nothing back.
You finish the seam and bite the thread. Before you go out, you tear a strip from the old banner that still says Ashdown's Grand Marvels in faded red, and you write on the back in the blue chalk he left in the wagon: There is no love without forgiveness. Then you carry the canvas out into the cold and hand him one end, and you let him take the weight.
