Adult elephant and calf walking across the back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large adult elephant walks to the left with a smaller calf following on the right, the calf's trunk reaching toward the adult's tail. The bold black outline is paired with soft grey shading that models the wrinkled skin, ears and legs. The ink is set in black and grey against the skin, with the pair running horizontally across the upper back.

The dust comes up off the Karoo flats like a tide that has forgotten the sea, and by the time you have the ration crates lashed the ridge is gone. You can't see the lead cart, only the faint orange glow of the beacon on its mast. Behind you the calf is stamping and trumpeting in the brown air, a thin high sound that carries the way it used to on the old recordings.

Hannah-Two, the matriarch, does not hurry. She has walked this route three times with the drought-proof seed trucks and knows the ground under the dust better than any map. She simply keeps going, one broad grey foot after the other, her ears folding and opening like sails. You go back to the calf and put your hand on the rough hide of his shoulder. Hold on to her, you tell him. Keep to the sway.
He reaches back with his trunk, searching blindly, and the tip finds the tail the way it always does, curling round the coarse end and tightening. You have watched this a hundred times at the reserve, and you still feel it in your chest. It is how the herd has always kept together when nothing else can be seen. The calf sets his feet in her tracks, and the two of them move forward as one animal with two heads of sense.
By dusk the storm thins to a copper haze and the beacon swims into view. Hannah-Two stops, lifts her trunk to the wind, and the calf lets go of the tail only long enough to step up beside her. You count the crates against the manifest and find every one. Nothing is lost. The herd is still together, and so are you.
