Walking elephant on an ankle

Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant walks towards the viewer, drawn with a bold dark outline and soft grey shading on the skin and ears. The trunk curls down toward the front legs, and the tusks are picked out in lighter tones. The plain pale skin and patterned fabric behind it keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Dot, The elephant was still propped by the hall piano when the caretaker started jangling his keys, so I suppose the reunion isn't quite over. You'll remember it from the Harvest Play in 1971, the one Mr Ashworth cut from grey felt and stuffed with horsehair until it looked like it had walked straight out of a geography book. Nobody could bear to throw it away, and somehow it ended up in the hall cupboard for fifty years.

Tonight Pauline Hargreaves stood beside it and told everyone how she'd pushed its tail across the playground in a wheelbarrow. Ray from the back row got teary, which I didn't expect. He kept saying it had come at us head low, trunk curled down as if it were about to pick up a dropped pencil case, and that none of us had stepped aside quickly enough. Everyone laughed, but he didn't.

Here's the thing I didn't say out loud. I remembered the felt tusks, which Mr Ashworth painted with cold tea so they'd look like ivory, and I remembered you holding the other end of the rope. We walked it all the way down to the bus shelter, two girls in wellies, and you said we should keep it. We didn't. I've thought about that rope more than I've thought about most things since.

Anyway. Bring the tins on Thursday. The caretaker says he'll unlock the hall again if you ask nicely, and I've told him you always do. Love, Maureen.
