The big top at Harrowgate Brothers had been sold for scrap in March, but Mrs Pell still wanted the elephant painted before the last tour of the winter fairs. "She's going to be looked at, Dot," she said, and handed me the brushes. I had painted fairground horses for twenty years, lilies and scrolls along their flanks, and I had never painted anything that could lift a grown man off the ground with its nose.

Juniper, the old cow, stood in the wet straw with her trunk up, the way she always held it when she wanted a carrot or wanted the band to start. I mixed the red from madder and the teal from a tin the Irish lad had left behind. Every leaf sprig I set on her ear, she flicked her tail as if to say I'd missed one. We worked from six until the lamps guttered, and by the third night the dots ran round her shoulders like a row of lit windows.

The lorry came on the Thursday. Mr Pell stood at the ramp with his hat in his hands, looking at the patterns rather than the elephant. "Nobody will pay to watch a circus that's packing up," he said. "But they'll stop to look at that." He meant it kindly, I think. Juniper went up the ramp with her trunk held high, orange scrolls blazing under the lamps, and she never once looked back at the empty ring.

I kept the smallest brush, the one for dots. Some mornings in the caravan I still dab a single spot of teal on the back of my hand, just to see whether my hand remembers how it was done.
