Aeroplane silhouette tattoo on a back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person lies on their side on a wooden floor, with one hand resting on their upper back. A solid black silhouette of a single-engine aeroplane sits on the skin, seen in profile with its wings extended. The ink is flat and dark, and the photograph is taken from a close, low angle with soft natural light.

Her brother had flown a yellow crop duster out of that field for thirty-one years, spraying barley and once, memorably, a vicar's allotment. When the cancer came, he asked for one thing only: that the plane be kept on the wall, so the sun would throw its shape across the yard every afternoon. Ray said a shadow was not a plan. Dilys said the sun had never needed one.
They finished as the light went. The paint was still tacky when Ray stepped back, and the silhouette sat on the cream metal just as it had sat above the kitchen sink for thirty years, nose lifted, wings flat as a held breath. Then the lane floodlight clicked on and threw a long, thin shadow across the fen, so that for a moment the wall seemed to have let go of something.
Dilys peeled the cornflake stencil from the door, folded it into her coat pocket and said nothing about the council. "Leave the gate open," she said. "He always hated being shut in."
