Two small birds on the nape of neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind with her hair tied up, showing two small birds in flight on the back of her neck. The birds are drawn with fine, dark linework and minimal shading, and the ink reads as black against her skin. The soft, sepia-toned composition centres on the tattoo, with her bare shoulders and back framing it in a dim setting.

Listen, and do not interrupt me with your coughing, for the swallows will not come back to a hall full of noise. Two of them nested under the eaves of the glassmaker's house in Veddan, the kingdom where the river runs uphill on feast days. The glassmaker's daughter, Ilse Marrow, kept them fed with crumbs from her bread and never once asked them for anything in return.

Then the king's tax men came up the valley with their ledgers, and the glassmaker was taken for a debt he had never owed. Ilse was sent to the cold towers at Harrowgate with nothing but the clothes she stood in. The swallows followed the cart for three days, dipping and climbing above the wheels, until the guard grew tired of their chattering and threw a stone.

Now here is the part the old women tell differently in every village. The birds did not fall. They flew straight to the tower window where Ilse sat, and they carried her message out the only way a swallow knows: one to the north wind, one to the south, each knowing a different gate. By midsummer the people of Veddan had come with ladders and iron bars, and the tower stood open like a cracked egg.

Ilse walked home by the river that runs uphill. Her father was waiting at the door with a glass cup in his hands, though it held no water. She set it on the sill, and two swallows came down to drink from it, as if the water had been waiting for them all along.
