A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had not come to the Kalenga flats for three seasons, and by the fourth dry spring the only water left was the brackish pan under the old baobab, where the herds had started queuing before dawn. Amara's grandfather, who kept the borehole pump at the edge of the reserve, said the giraffe was the first to see the cloud, because her head rose above the heat shimmer while everyone else's stayed in the dust. She stood among the thorn trees and called out what she saw, but the others had heard her announce a great many things from that height, and most of them were wrong.

The antelope with the long, ridged horns would not give up the shade to anyone, and the zebra, whose stripes made the air hum around her when she moved, said the pan was hers by right of having been there first. Between them, the lion lay with his mane full of burrs and watched the water without bothering to get up. The tiger had come in the back of a travelling lorry two winters before, when its gate broke on the Nairobi road, and it still kept to the far bank as though the grass might be checked for its papers.

The cloud came over the ridge in the afternoon, slow and grey as wet wool. Nobody ran. They stood where they were and waited, and when the first fat drops hit the pan the lion got up, shook the dust from his shoulders and walked down to the edge without looking at anyone. The zebra moved aside to make room. The tiger came across the bank with its ears flat, and the antelope lowered its horns without a word.

By dark the water had risen a hand's width and the pan was full of their reflections, lion and zebra and antelope, the tall giraffe bending last of all, her neck folding down slowly until her head reached the surface beside the tiger's striped face.
