One dry season the headman, Old Serafim, announced that whoever brought back the largest mango from the far valley would have the tree for good. Pico set off at dawn with a woven basket on his back. Mandu followed, grinning, with a length of rope he had stolen from the fishing boats coiled over one shoulder.
Pico found the mango, but it was too heavy to carry and rolled straight down into the river. He leapt after it, and Mandu, who had been hiding in the reeds, caught Pico's tail and would not let go. They tugged all the way up the bank, Pico pulling forward, Mandu hauling back and grinning the whole way, until the entire village had come down to watch.
Serafim laughed so hard he dropped his pipe in the mud. He ruled that the tree belonged to neither of them, and that the cousins would share its fruit one mango at a time, taking turns to eat with their backs to each other. To this day the fishermen say that if you see two monkeys on the north slope with their tails knotted together, you should leave them the tree.
