Tiger and bamboo across a full back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large tiger walks forward across the back, its head turned towards the viewer with bared eyes and a detailed muzzle. Bamboo leaves and stems frame the figure on both sides, and the tiger's striped body and large paws extend down the lower back. The shading moves from soft greys to deep blacks, giving the animal volume and a sense of depth against the background foliage.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The grey cat had come down through the grove again before the lamps were lit, and Osei Mabry stood at the back door of the rice store with a sickle in one hand and a bucket of cold tea in the other, watching it go. It did not hurry. It walked the way a man walks through his own hall, head low, the stripes on its flank moving like smoke whenever the wind pushed the bamboo. Nobody in Hollin Cross had ever seen its eyes close.

Her grandmother had told her the tiger was the grove's bookkeeper. Every stalk cut without asking was written down, and every leaf that fell on a grave was counted against the family who had cut it. Osei had laughed at that until the spring the timber merchant from Lowe arrived with his cart and his ledger and took four hundred poles for the new terrace houses without leaving a coin. That night the tiger stood at the edge of the yard and looked at the cart for a long time.

On the last evening of the dry month she carried the tea out and sat on the low wall facing the grove. The tiger came out of the leaves and stopped a length from her boots. She offered it nothing. She said, "The poles are gone, and I have no money to pay for them." It blinked slowly, turned, and walked back into the green, and the bamboo closed behind it without a sound.

In the morning the merchant's cart was found tipped in the ditch below the ridge, every pole still lashed on, and nobody in Hollin Cross asked how it had got there. Osei went out to the grove with the sickle and cut nothing. She gathered the fallen leaves into a bundle, tied it with string, and left it on the wall, a receipt she could not have explained to anyone.
