Past the salt flats, where the road gave up pretending to be a road, lived a well-digger named Tomas Vell who had learnt his letters from a cracked hymnbook. He had one word he could write without looking, and he painted it in curling capitals on the side of his cart. His mother had told him it was the old Greek for a love that asks nothing back, the sort you give a stranger's child at a crossroads. The paint had faded to grey by the time he was an old man.

One August a woman came walking up the road from the east with a boy on her hip and no water left in the gourd. Tomas had two cups of water and a mule that needed both. He stood with the bucket in his hand for as long as it takes a kettle to boil, counting his own thirst, and then he tipped the water into the boy's cup first. The woman asked what he wanted for it. He said the water was spoken for, and went back to his digging.

Years later a surveyor's party camped by the well and asked about the faded word on the cart. Tomas told them the truth, which was that he had never once known what the word would cost him. They laughed, drank the well nearly dry, and rode off east in the heat. The well filled again overnight, as wells do when someone has been generous with them.

In the morning the word on the cart was beaded with dew, and the road ran on towards the hills as if nothing had been given away at all.
