Bass clef and hope script tattoo
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black tattoo shows a bass clef with two dots on its left, followed by the word hope in flowing cursive script. The linework is thin and even, with a solid black filled shape sitting between the letters. The ink is set against smooth, pale skin in a close, slightly angled photograph.

You learn the bass line the winter the Corran Bay Palais loses its piano tuner to the fishing boats and the band is left to you and a borrowed amplifier that hums like a kettle. Mr Ferris, who runs the hall, says the dancers don't hear the bass so much as feel it through the sprung floor, and you believe him, because the boards shiver under your boots whenever you stand at the edge of the stage.

Dolly Frayne sings the Saturday numbers with her gloves off, and on the third Saturday in February she stops mid-chorus as the lights go amber and then dark when the generator coughs. In the dark you keep playing. You find the root note by memory, the way you'd find a stair rail in your own house, and you hold it. Somebody claps, then the room fills with the sound of feet finding the beat again.
Afterwards Dolly finds you coiling the lead in the cloakroom and presses a pencilled sheet into your hand. Across the top, in her round hand, she has written one word, the last line of the song she never got to finish, and beneath it a single note head blacked in hard. She says a note you hold is the only kind that gets anybody across a floor.
You pin the sheet above the amplifier. Ferris fixes the generator in March. The bass stays where it has always been, low and steady, and when the lights come up you still play the way you did in the dark, holding the note just long enough for someone to find their feet.
