A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had shut the Dun Hollow road for three days, and the Crooked Stag had run out of everything except candles and patience. Nell Ashdown counted the candles twice each morning, the way her father had taught her to count coins, though there was little left to spend them on.

On the fourth night a carter's boy came in stamping, with a sack he would not put down. Inside was a pewter letter case that belonged to a Mr Harrow, who had taken the Thursday coach and never come back for it. Nell opened the case because nobody else was there to stop her. Inside lay a single sheet folded around a sprig of holly, and across the top, in a looping hand, was the word Hope. Its capital was crossed by a thread of green silk that had been drawn through the paper with great care, so it would not tear.

She sat with it by the fire until the logs went grey. The silk was dyed the green of wet moss, she decided, and whoever had threaded it had meant the stroke to stay. Mr Harrow had written nothing else. Perhaps the word had been the whole letter, a single request meant for someone who would know what it asked.

At first light the ploughs came grinding up from the valley. Nell wrapped the sheet back around its holly, tucked it into the case, and carried it out to the lane herself. The snow had a crust that held her weight, and the sky over the moor had gone the colour of pale tea. She left the case on the milestone where the carrier would see it, then walked back in to light the fires.
