Alchemy circle on a palm
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed circular design with an outer ring of inscriptions, inner rings, radiating lines, and several symbols in circles sits across the palm. The linework is thin and uniform in dark blue-black ink, with no visible shading. The pale skin and dark background make the design stand out, and the tattoo fills most of the frame.

The old salt-boiler on Selda had a rule that nobody crossed the sound after the bell at Kirkhay, and so when Mairead Oswen came up the shingle at dusk with ink on her hands, the ferryman only raised his eyebrows and kept his oars still.

She had come for a debt. Her brother had gone over to the mainland with a sack of barley and a promise to return the kettle he had borrowed, and he had not come back, and the village said he had been taken by the wrecker's lamp that burns blue under the cliffs. Mairead did not believe in lamps. She believed in arithmetic. Every thing that was lost had to weigh the same as something found, her grandmother had taught her, and the only honest way to get it back was to draw the sum out in a circle and let the circle hold it.
So she sat on the upturned boat with the candle guttering and drew it on the flat of her left palm with a steel pen and a pot of blue-black ink. Rings first, then the thin lines radiating like spokes from a wheel that had no hub, then the words around the rim in the old script, which she copied from memory though she could not read them. Three small signs sat in their own rings: a crescent, a key, a circle with a dot. When she closed the last loop her hand ached and the ink had already begun to dry into the lines of her skin.
The ferryman rowed her out to the wrecker's lamp in the grey before morning. The blue light was only a lantern on a post, and beside it, sitting on a coil of rope with his boots full of water, was her brother, who said he had been waiting for someone to bring the kettle.
