Alchemical transmutation circle on a palm

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black line tattoo covers the centre of an open palm, showing a circle enclosing a five-pointed star and a smaller inner ring. Symbols sit around the outer rim and at the points of the star, with small dotted accents between them. The linework is even and fine, in black and grey with no colour, and the design is centred on the palm.

The chalk ran out before the outer ring was closed, so Marta finished it with a heel of charcoal from the kiln at the forest's edge. Her grandmother had said a circle left open lets in whatever wants to get out, and the old woman had never once been wrong about a door.

Inside the ring she drew the star with a hazel stick, five points each touching the circle the way the miller's wheel touched the stream. At each point she set a small sign her father had taught her: the sign for iron, the sign for salt, the sign for a hen's egg, the sign for a wet February. The inner ring she left empty, as he had told her, because that was where the trade happened, and a trade needs somewhere to stand.

Foxes came to the edge of the clearing to watch. The baker's boy came too, holding his cap in both hands, wanting to know if she could turn his debts into bread. She told him the circle only gives back what you put in, weight for weight, and asked him what he had. He had a bad knee and a sister who needed boots. Marta did not ask for the knee.

When she stepped into the centre, the dew on the grass lifted in a thin silver ring and settled again on the village's boots, which were suddenly new, and on the sister, who laughed at the stiff new laces. Marta swept the charcoal dust from the circle into her palm and kept the lines there, because a circle must be closed somewhere, and the last place a clever girl would think to look is her own hand.
