Symbols across wrist and hand
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a wrist and hand with black linework symbols, including an arrow, a diamond, a dot and a stylised figure on the forearm. A banded bracelet-like line sits at the wrist, and a triangle with an eye motif and a circle of small symbols covers the back of the hand. The ink is solid black with fine, even lines against the skin, and the photo is taken against a blue denim lap and dark background.

You find the first mark at ten past one, chalked low on the brickwork under a railway arch in Salford, a short arrow pointing towards the river. Nobody else has stopped for it. The rain has softened the lines, but you can still make out a diamond with a hollow centre, a dot beside it, and a black disc that someone has gone over twice, pressing so hard the chalk cracked.

The second mark is scratched into the glass of a bus shelter, a triangle with an open eye inside it. Beneath the eye, a band of lines runs flat across the pane like a belt. You follow the arrow's logic because it is the only logic you have left at that hour: past the shuttered launderette, over the footbridge, down the steps by the old tannery where the streetlamps buzz and go out one by one as you pass.
At the bottom, stuck to a drainpipe with gaffer tape, is a laminated card. A ring of tiny symbols circles its edge: a moon, a key, a bird's foot, a crooked star. In the centre someone has written your name in capitals, crossed it out, then written a time, 01:14, which is exactly the time it is now.
You stand there longer than you mean to. Behind you a night bus sighs at the stop and its doors fold open, the destination board reading only ANYWHERE. You could get on. Instead you take the pen from your coat, draw one small dot beside the diamond, and leave the card where it is for whoever comes looking next.
