Alice in Wonderland back piece
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large black and grey back piece shows Alice standing on a chequered path, surrounded by playing card soldiers holding spears, with a grinning Cheshire cat in the upper right. Lower down are a mushroom, a top hat, a pocket watch and a white rabbit, set among grass and foliage. The shading is fine and detailed, with strong contrast between the black and light grey areas, and the design fills the entire back.

Before the bells of St Ebba's had finished their first cough, Mother Fenn came down to Lowgate's bakehouse and found the flour already sifted. Nobody in the village but her sifted flour. The sacks had been opened, and a trail of small footprints ran across the boards from the back door to the proving trough, each ending in a neat little claw mark at the heel.

She waited behind the door with her rolling pin. At the third bell a white rabbit came in on its hind legs, wearing a waistcoat and carrying a pocket watch the size of a cheese plate. 'Late, late,' it told the watch, and it began lifting the loaves from the racks, counting them under its breath and tucking each one beneath its arm. Above the oven, a grey cat lay along the beam, grinning at nothing.
Fenn stepped out with her rolling pin raised. The rabbit did not run. It opened the watch and said the sun would touch the mushroom on Gallows Hill in twelve minutes, and if she could name the real miller among the three hatted men at the crossroads, she could keep her loaves. Fenn had sold that man bread for thirty years and knew his cough from anyone's. So she walked with it through the frost, past three painted card soldiers stamping their spears on the path, and when the first light came orange over the hill she pointed at the one with flour on his sleeves.
'Correct,' said the rabbit, sounding put out. It set the loaves on her step, still warm, and went off along the hedge humming. Fenn went back to her ovens. Every morning after that she heard a watch ticking beneath the floorboards, always a little ahead of the bells, and Lowgate's bread never once went stale.
