Fine line black and grey tattoo of a crescent moon with a sleeping face, roses and trailing vines on the upper thigh.

Crescent moon with face and flowers on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A crescent moon with a serene face in profile sits at the centre of the design, surrounded by small blossoms, a rose, and trailing vines with dotted stems. The linework is fine and delicate, with soft stippled shading on the moon's face and petals. The tattoo is shown in black and grey ink against pale skin, with the design filling a vertical area of the limb.

Dear Nell,

The lock keeper at Stoke Hythe says the cut has been low since March, and I believe him, because the moon has been coming up over the willows like a paring somebody dropped. Every night this week she's sat sideways on the horizon with her face turned away from me, as if she has her own business to get on with. Dad always said she was shy of anyone who wanted something from her. I never knew what he meant until I tried to sleep on the back deck with the kettle going cold.

Mrs Abara on the moored cruiser asked me for a bit of sugar yesterday and then stood there talking about her grandson's wedding for twenty minutes. I didn't mind. She had a rose tucked behind her ear, a real one from the hedge by the towpath, and she said the moon in the lock pool had looked up at her the night before. I laughed. Then I went and looked, and there was a face in the water, pale and quiet, with the reed stems trailing down from its brow.

I've decided I'm going to paint the roses back onto the roof of the boat, the way Dad did before he got poorly. I've got the tin of cream and the good brush in the locker. I'll start tonight, while she's still thin and low, and see if she'll come round to watch me do it.

Come up at Easter if you can. Bring the thick jumper. The crescent will be fatter by then, and I want you to see her face before she turns it away again.

Love, Jo
