Alice and flamingo in an ornate frame on a thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a girl with long hair holding a flamingo, set within a scrolled oval frame with a crest at the top. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft grey shading across the figures and the ground beneath them. The design fills the centre of the thigh, with the frame providing a strong outline against the skin and denim shorts above.

Pim had cut the flamingo's neck four times, and four times Mr Hollis had held the proof up to the gaslight and sighed. "It is a bird, not a hairpin," he said. "Give it some spine." The girl's hair was the trouble of the morning. Pim had spent an hour on it, lifting each strand from the boxwood with the burin, until the whole head looked like weather blowing off a hill.

Then the carter shouted in the street and the window rattled, and Pim, sent down to the basement for paper, remembered the other block stacked behind the coal scuttle. It was a croquet lawn, cut years ago for a book that never went to press, and in one corner someone had drawn a small oval frame, scrolled and crested, with nothing yet inside it. Pim carried it upstairs under his arm. The lawn had been scraped away. Only the girl was left, half-finished, one arm around a flamingo that had lost its head.
He did not know who had started it, and Hollis would not say. That evening Pim sat up with a lamp and a fresh sheet of boxwood and worked the curve of the neck from memory of the proof. The line came easily. When he finished, the bird looked up at him with an expression of mild and perfect contempt, and Pim, laughing, pressed the block flat and went to bed.
In the morning the proof had been pulled and the flamingo had its neck. Hollis said nothing about it. He only pinned the sheet to the wall beside the others, and Pim saw that the girl's hair now lifted in the same breeze that had rattled the window all night.
