The gentleman in room four has taken over the hall table again for his patience, and this time he has laid the whole pack out in four neat rows, spades, clubs, diamonds and hearts, as if he means to ask the sea for a card back. Mr Teale says the pocket watch on his bedside has not kept proper time since August. I told him it keeps the right time for the people who need it, which is more than the ferry does.

You will remember the girl who came in June with the cardboard suitcase and the blue ribbon. She went down the cliff path on Tuesday with nothing but a sandwich and the watch I had lent her, and came back at teatime with wet hair and a story about a tunnel behind the chapel wall that let out, she swears, into the back kitchen of the chip shop. Nobody believed her. Mr Teale did, and now he talks of nothing but doors that are smaller on the inside and cakes that say eat me in icing.

I am enclosing the top hat she left on the coat stand. There is a note tucked in the crown saying it belongs to whoever is curious enough to wear it. Mrs Pargeter wants it burned. I think it wants a hook by the door and a bit of sunshine.

Come at Michaelmas if you can. The room with the blue curtains is free, and the sea is loud enough to drown out my opinions, which is a mercy to everyone.
