Black line floral vine design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A vertical design of five-petalled outline flowers joined by curling stems, with dots and pointed leaves scattered along the length. The linework is bold and even in solid black on white, with open loops and spirals at the top and bottom. The composition is a single tall, narrow panel with no shading or colour.

The vine came over the spoil heap the spring after the Wheal Jenny men went home for good. Nobody planted it. My mother said bramble seed rides in on boot soles, and that the pale five-petalled flowers were only dog rose, but she still wrote its name on the back of the rent book, the way she did with anything she couldn't account for.

I was nine and mostly interested in the snails. The spirals curled up the engine house wall and out along the chapel railings, and where the stems met the old tramway they threw off little pointed leaves, so black against the slate you'd think someone had gone along with a pen. Dad came back from the Trewint works with his lungs in tatters and sat on the step most afternoons, counting flowers. Five petals each. He said the miners used to scratch the same pattern on the powder-house door before they were let underground, a charm against the shaft taking them.
The turn came when the council men dug the verge to lay a new drain and found the footings of a cottage nobody had ever admitted to. Inside, cut into the lintel, were the same loops and dots, and beside them a row of initials, the last of them my great-grandmother's, with a date from the year the water came up. Mum went quiet. That evening she took her shears to the vine and cut it back to the wall, then stood a long time in the yard with the clippings in her apron.
Next morning the stems had grown back across the gap in the brickwork, greener than before, and a single flower had opened on the step where Dad used to sit. Mum left it. She said some things only need a bit of room.
