Black ink swirl flourish design
Black and grey · Flash
A black ink design drawn on white paper, built from curling calligraphic strokes and loose scrolls that rise diagonally from the lower left to the upper right. The central form resembles a stylised figure or letter, with thick and thin strokes and small tapering tails. The image is greyscale and shows the design alone with no skin or body part visible.

The tow rope has gone slack again and you are the one who has to lean over the side with the boathook. The Ouse is brown and quick this morning, and the Mary Ellen swings on her moorings like a gate. Your brother Tom shouts from the wheelhouse that the kettle is on, which means he wants you to stop being useless and come in.

Out past the lock, the river does what it always does when it is in a mood: it curls back on itself. You watch the eddies come off the piles in long dark tails, one loop folding into the next and climbing towards the bank where the willows bend. Your grandfather used to say the water was writing something and you were too slow to read it. He painted the barge's name in gold letters that flaked off years ago, and he could draw a scroll on a bollard in four strokes of the chalk.
Tom makes the tea strong enough to stand a spoon in. He asks whether you'll sell her in the spring. You say nothing, because the answer is in your hands and he knows it. Through the porthole you see a heron lift off the far bank, unhurried, its wings flicking a thin trail of spray up into the cold light.
You finish the knot. The rope comes tight, the barge leans into the current, and for a moment the wake lifts and turns over itself exactly the way the lines on your grandfather's old sketch did, rising from the mud towards the sky. You take the cup from Tom and say the river will do for another season. Maybe that is a lie. The water doesn't mind either way.
