Black serif lettering reading All was well, with asterisks around it, tattooed on the inner wrist.

All was well quote on the wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is the words All was well in a black serif typeface, set on a slight diagonal across the inner wrist. Asterisk marks sit above the start of the phrase and below the end, and the lines are solid with even black ink. The photograph is taken close up in warm light, with the wrist filling most of the frame and a patterned fabric visible at the edges.

Dear Nell, the lamp was out again when I climbed up at four, and I stood on the gallery with the rain coming sideways and the glass ticking under my palm until Mr Pardoe's boy came puffing up the rock with the new mantle in a biscuit tin. We had it lit by half past. You'll say I ought not to have gone up in such weather, and you'll be right, but the rock doesn't care what I ought to do.

The asterisks are a thing I've started doing in the log, little stars pricked in the margin beside any night the light burned clean through. Mr Pardoe thinks it's a code for the Admiralty. It is only a way of counting. Three hundred and eleven stars since March, and not one of them I'd trade for a dry night in Penzance.

Last night a fishing smack ran wide of the Skerry and came round the headland with her lantern swinging, and I watched her until she was past the reef. Then I wrote the words beneath the stars, the ones Mother used to say over the bread when the oven was too hot to open: all was well. I don't know who was listening up there, but I wrote it down anyway, in pencil, so I could rub it out if it proved wrong.

The smack came in on the morning tide with her crew waving their caps. Tell the children the stove will be hot for Sunday. I'll be on the Thursday boat, and you can scold me then.
