Mr Pargeter brought the envelope to the typing pool at ten to five, which was his first mistake. The second was asking Miss Dunn to type it before the tea trolley came round. I had the Remington nearest the window. Inside was a single sheet from the harbour board, a table of tides that did not match the moon, and a note in green ink: Please confirm. Do not be alarmed.

I confirmed nothing. I typed it out exactly as he had written it, clacking through the sums, and by the time I reached the foot of the page the bell in the harbour office had begun ringing by itself, one slow stroke for every sheet we had already filed. Miss Dunn stopped with her fingers hovering above her keys. "Well," she said. "That's new."

Things kept arriving after that. A crate of herring stamped with tomorrow's date. A telegram from the lighthouse keeper at Scarrow asking whether the sea was still meant to go out at night. I typed every one, because the carbon copies had to go somewhere, and each time I struck a key the letters came out crisp and certain, as though the machine had decided something I had not been consulted on.

On Friday Mr Pargeter returned with the same green ink and a fresh sheet. Beneath his signature he had written, in a hand that wobbled only slightly, that things were shaping up to be pretty odd. I rolled the paper into the carriage, set the margin, and typed my reply underneath: Yes. Shall I bring the tea?
