Two black script lettering tattoos, one reading amica mea on the upper back and one reading soror mea on the forearm.

Amica mea and soror mea script tattoos

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The top photo shows the small words amica mea in thin, cursive black script on the upper back, close to the neck. The lower photo shows soror mea in larger, bolder black script across the inner forearm, with a caption below the pair. Both tattoos are shown in black ink on skin with plain, even lighting.

Dear Nell, the kettle has boiled twice while I wrote this, and Mam still hasn't forgiven the gull that got into the washing. You asked in your last letter what I'd do with the money from the Ashworth sale if the bakery lease came through. I've decided. Mr Pelham, who taught us our declensions in the damp room above the chandler's, used to say soror mea was a word you had to earn. I thought he was showing off. Then Father's cart went through the ice at Lune Bridge, and you walked four miles in your stockings to fetch the doctor, and I understood he had meant something plainer than grammar.

So I'm sending the caddy, and this letter, and a line I copied out in my best hand, because my hand isn't good enough for much else now: amica mea, soror mea. Friend, sister, in whichever order the weather lets us have them.

Come home at Michaelmas. The kettle will be on, and I've left the back gate open, the way you always swore you'd close and never did.
