The lift in Carrick House has been out since Tuesday, so I have been doing the stairs with the shopping like a woman half my age. Mrs Okafor on eleven says the council will fix it by Easter, which is what they said last Easter. I thought you would want to hear that I am still climbing, even if I am not sure why.

I found the old lace doily in the bottom drawer, the one your gran starched every Sunday, and I cut it round the oval mirror from the hall stand. It looked more like a crown than a frame when I was finished, so I put the picture of the heart from the hospital leaflet behind the glass, the one they gave us after the scan. You said I was morbid to keep it. I told you it was the only picture of anything inside us that ever looked honest.

Anyway, the light comes through the balcony door at about six and goes straight through the lace, and the shadows it throws across the carpet look like someone has been drawing on the floor in ink. I sit and watch them move. Come up when the lift is working. Bring the good biscuits, not the digestives.
