The dog had sat at the end of platform four every evening since the last week of October, and Ivo Marsh had stopped trying to move it along. It faced the rails rather than the waiting room, so all anyone saw was its back and the ridge of its shoulders against the lamp. Each night Ivo brought a biscuit from the buffet tin and set it on the bench beside the dog, and each night it was still there at the end of the last train, untouched and going cold in the drizzle.

The stationmaster wanted the dog sent to the rescue kennels in Derby. Ivo said it wasn't lost, only early, and that he had known trains to be late before. Mrs Okafor from the ticket office said dogs understood timetables better than men did, which Ivo suspected was true. He had found the tag on the first morning, a small enamel heart, red as a signal lamp, hanging from a collar that was far too wide for the neck.

On the Thursday a woman in a grey coat came through the barrier after the ten-forty had gone. She saw the dog and stopped, and did not call out to it. She sat on the far end of the bench and looked at the tracks the way the dog did, and for a long while neither of them moved. Ivo, sweeping near the stairs, found he had put the broom down.

When the signal changed, the dog rose slowly and turned round. For the first time Ivo saw its face, and the heart swung and caught the lamplight as it crossed the platform toward her. The woman bent down with her arms open, and the empty bench was left under the light with a single biscuit on it.
