Compass in a heart frame on an upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A compass rose with red points and a grey and black centre sits inside a heart-shaped frame. The frame has bold black outlines, gold scrollwork and a fleur-de-lis at the top. The fills are solid, with teal and mint panels behind the compass and a mix of gold, red and grey shading.

The snow had buried the lane to the height of the gatepost, so Marjorie Vell carried the lamp down the cellar steps herself, counting them under her breath. There were eleven, always eleven, though her father had sworn there were twelve. She reached the bottom with snow melting off her hem and found the case where she had left it on the barrel, the heart-shaped frame of gilded wood gone dull at the edges, its fleur-de-lis chipped at the tip.

Tobias Crane had come off the coach that afternoon with a surveyor's chain and a face that did not like being snowed in. He wanted to walk to the old mill at first light, and he wanted a compass to do it, because the road markers had gone under the drifts. She had not wanted to lend him her father's. The rose inside it was painted in faded red points on mint and teal, with the needle sitting dark and steady in the grey centre, and it had never once lied to her about which way the moor lay.
Upstairs, the fire was ticking. Crane was waiting by the bar with his hands folded like a clerk's. She set the case in his palm and watched him turn it, frowning, as the needle swung and shivered against the glass.
"It keeps pointing at the wall," he said.
"It points at the kitchen," Marjorie said. "Everything in this house points at the kitchen in January. My father used to say it was the only direction worth going." She took the case back, rested it on the sill facing the black window, and waited until the needle settled south, towards the warm room and the bread and the door she meant to bolt.
