Anatomical heart in hands with heartbeat line
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A realistic anatomical heart with visible stitches is cradled by two grey shaded hands. The heart is rendered in red and pink with soft shading, and the hands use black and grey tones with detailed knuckles and creases. A thin red heartbeat trace sits beneath the hands on the upper arm, against the pale skin.

The rain had been coming sideways down Kirkgate since six, and Dad's stall was the only one still lit at the bottom of the market. He sold secondhand radios and kettles that worked if you shook them, and he kept a strip of paper from a heart monitor tucked under the till like a receipt he never cashed.

Mum had been stitched up twice that winter, neat black thread along the muscle, as if someone had tried to close a parcel with cold fingers. Dad never said much about it. He'd sit on the upturned crate with his big hands folded between his knees, turning the strip over and reading the wiggles like a fortune. 'Spikes are the good bit,' he told me once. 'Flat is when you start worrying.'
On the last Saturday in November a boy came in with a broken transistor wrapped in a carrier bag and asked if Dad could fix it in an afternoon. Dad looked at the wire, then at the boy's hands, cupped together as if the thing might spill, and said Monday. He took the back off with a screwdriver no bigger than a pin. Inside were tiny green boards and a fault he traced for two hours while the rain drummed on the awning.
When the set crackled into a dance tune, Dad pulled the paper from under the till, smoothed it flat on the counter, and drew a line of red biro under the last spike. 'There,' he said. 'Still going.' Then he put the kettle on, and we drank tea from chipped mugs while the market packed up around us in the wet.
